Confirming suspicions.
I read this editorial, and it reminded me of a bunch of people I work with. Ending up with this weird "rank-link" imbalance frankly bothers the shit out of me, not only because of the glaring social inadequacy it entails, but also because I see "successful" officers who pretty much embody this weird set of characteristics--frequently with words like "colonel" or "general" in front of their names. Almost became one of them, too. Strangely enough, I can thank a military academy for grinding that sort of rampant careerism out of me.
People suck.

I don't know - perhaps by getting that title in front of your name you could have broken the cycle of disfunction...
Yeah, right...It takes more than one person.

Two words: Cognitive Dissonance. I've known THREE guys who have pulled that sort of reform off, out of hundreds. Two of the officers in question were academics, which really sort of protects them. Everyone else fell prey to the Kool-Aid at one stage or another.
If you can find a copy, read "On the Psychology of Military Incompetence".
